There are approximately 225,000 medical errors reported each year in the United States and almost 50% of them happen in the ER. Three resent studies show that preventable ER errors are mostly diagnostic errors and these often lead to permanent disability or death.

What doctors know that you don't know
What you need to take with you when you go to the ER
Why you need to take an active role in your own healthcare
A few easy steps to assure that you will be given the best possible care in the ER.
Hello, my name is Randy Van Ittersum

At age 42 I suffered a massive heart attack. When I was rushed to the ER in an ambulance, I was incoherent and wasn't able to provide the doctors with any health history. My wife accompanied me to the hospital and because of her medical background she was able to communicate effectively my past medical history and medications. But, what if she hadn't been there?

I soon became concerned about the need to carry ones medical records because of my own personal medical problems. After my heart attack, I discovered that healthcare is facing a crisis simply because they can't share critical medical information on a timely basis in a medical emergency.

Like many heart patients, I love to eat. Unfortunately, my eating habits have resulted in indigestion which presents itself with the same symptoms of that of a heart attack. This resulted in many trips to the ER to get checked out.

When the ER doctor would do an EKG, it would be abnormal because of my previous heart attack. This always resulted in an overnight stay in the hospital until they received copies of my old EKGs.

I don't know if you can relate to this or not, but I found that every time I went to the ER the first thing they asked for was my medical history and what medications I was taking. I couldn't even pronounce the names of the medications, let alone tell them the dosage.

As a result of needing my medical history, describing my medications as the big honking pill, and the cost of staying overnight in the hospital waiting for my EKG to arrive, I began to carry copies of my medical records in a large envelope whenever I traveled away from home. But as one might imagine, with a two inch thick file this method was very inconvenient.

I am the founder and CEO of a software company, so by applying my technical background and with the help of my son who is a physician, I developed LifeKey. LifeKey replaced my large paper file and is convenient to carry so I take it with me everywhere. For years we struggled to make a device whose records can be viewed in every ER in the United States without the need of proprietary hardware or software. I am excited to say that mission was accomplished.

Today, I am on a mission, which is to convince you that it is in your best interest to have copies of your medical records with you when you go to the ER and that LifeKey is the best way to do that.

Why? Because it could save your Life!!!!

This is important stuff!!!!

Wishing you a safe and healthy life,

Randy Van Ittersum

The frightening, undeniable truth is:

There is a definite chance that you or someone you love will be permanently injured, sickened or even KILLED because of:

A medical doctor or other health professional who makes a serious misdiagnosis

The facts are indisputable - medical error, misdiagnosis and miscommunication can lead to irreversible human tragedy - meaning death or permanent disability.

It's NOT My Intention to Bash Doctors.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not some doctor-bashing "loony" who is trying to scare the heck out of people and keep them from seeking medical care when they need it.

Quite the opposite is true.

In fact, I firmly believe that if you've been injured in an accident or if you've been diagnosed with a serious illness, there's NO better place in the WORLD to be than a well-equipped, Modern American Hospital.

I'm privileged to be surrounded by phenomenal physicians every day who are real heroes in their communities - quietly performing "daily miracles" in the lives of their patients. In fact my son, daughter-in-law, and four other family members are physicians.

In fact, what I have to say is very well-received by caring doctors throughout the country.

But, these are the facts...

About 50% of people with chronic illnesses have experienced a medical error according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Although some mistakes are harmless or quickly corrected, others can be deadly.

The problem when you go to the ER is that your medical records are scattered throughout the healthcare system, among the various medical providers that treat you, and are not available when they are needed the most; during a medical emergency. It is during the first 30-minutes of a medical emergency that life and death decisions must be made by the ER doctor.

The lack of accurate and complete medical information about a patient can lead to medical errors.

American Medical Association...
An analysis published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in 2001 concluded that medical errors are a major concern … This study calculated that one patient per 10,000 hospital admissions dies due to medical error.

Department of Health and Human Services...
According to the Department of Health and Human Services in a 2005 report, the following costs could be avoided if a patient's complete medical history were available when they went to the ER:
  • 20% of all lab tests and x-rays are unnecessary
  • 1 out of 7 hospital stays could be avoided, and
  • 44,000 - 98,000 lives are lost each year because of drug interactions.

New England Journal of Medicine...
"One in 50 heart attack victims are mistakenly sent home by emergency room doctors."

Researchers from New England Medical Center reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2000

Parade magazine article...
"The system is stretched beyond capacity. That can lead to mistakes… Sometimes less-experienced doctors treat life-threating illnesses. Diagnoses are missed or delayed."

"Over 225,000 people die from medical malpractice related injuries each year, and according to a 1999 study, nearly half of these are from emergency room errors."

With so much at stake, many experts say patients and families need to take a larger role in insuring their safety in the hospital.

This is what an ER doctor has to say...

"It is commonplace for patients to present to the ED without any real knowledge of their own prior medical conditions, medications, allergies, prior diagnostic testing other than "I have heart disease" or "I have diabetes" or "I take the little blue pill twice a day".

In the fast-paced world of ED, critical decisions are often made in the first few minutes and ED physicians are often faced with the dilemma of having to make a choice without knowing everything they would like to.

I see LifeKey as a simple, portable, universally acceptable way of bridging the ED information gap. Its immediate impact would be to quickly allow any ED provider to gain access to the necessary information regarding a critical patient allowing real-time informed medical decision making."

This is what a cardiologist has to say...

"An all too frequent and potentially life threatening handicap is my inability to access critical health care information in a timely fashion. Details I need to make decisions within minutes can literally take days or weeks to obtain. LifeKey can provide critical patient information on a timely basis.

Dear Concerned Patient, Caregiver or Responsible Parent,

If you have ANY sort of medical condition that requires you to see ANY physician on a regular basis for ANY reason.

-or-

If you are providing care for a child, older parent or any other loved one (or expect to in the future) and they are counting on YOU to safely provide for them and get them to medical appointments, the hospital or the pharmacy.

-or-

If you and your family "seem" healthy NOW - but you are smart enough to realize that your health status, as well that of your spouse or your children can change in the blink of an eye due to; accidents, sudden illness, food poisoning.etc, etc., etc.

If one of these describe you, I implore you to take the phone off the hook, close your door, shut down your email and eliminate any and ALL distractions that could potentially cause you to miss the critically urgent message I'm about to share with you over the next 5 minutes.

If you are a high-risk patient or have a long medical history -- you need a personal health record, one that can be viewed in any ER -- you need LifeKey!

Do you know that your personal physician won't even see you in his office until he has your file so that he can to refer to it?

Do you know that if you see a specialist -- the referring doctor sends the critical parts of your medical file to the specialist?

When you go to the ER, he has nothing! Zip!

The ER doctor must rely on you, a family member, or a friend to get the critical health information about you. The problem is:

Most people can't accurately describe there medical history and medications, and

most friends or relatives barely know their own medical history let alone yours.

Take this test right now:

What medications are your mother and father taking?
(Provide the exact name, dosage, and frequency of the drug.)
What allergies do they have?
(Do you know this as a fact or are you guessing?)
Describe their complete medical history including dates, surgeries, and what they were treated for.
Provide a copy of the most recent EKG.

If you can't accurately answer these questions you are not alone. Most people can't, yet this information is critical to your care in the ER. You need a personal health record that will accurately and reliably answer them for you. You need a LifeKey!

We have tried to provide you with accurate information to prove to you just how important it is to have your medical records with you when you go to the ER.

But what if you're still unsure?

What to do if you're still not convinced?

Stop right now! Go to the phone and ask someone you trust.

  Call your doctor's office -
Call the hospital and talk to a nurse on duty in the ER -
  Call your pharmacy -
Call anyone you know in the healthcare --

Ask them --

1. Is it a good idea to have copies of your medical records with you if you go to the ER?

2. Is there information in your medical file that would be important for the ER doctor to see?

Then come back and read the rest of this page.

Now that you're convinced that you should have copies of your medical records with you when you go to ER, let's talk about the best way to do that.

Announcing the only system ever designed to finally put you in the driver's seat of your healthcare, give you a greater sense of control, and in the end - greatly improve your chances of getting better. FAST.

All other attempts to solve this problem have fallen short of the mark. LifeKey is the only device in the world that uses our patent pending technology making your medical records accessible to any ER doctor or first responders.

Your family's complete medical history from every primary care physician, every specialist, and every pharmacy is on LifeKey™. All the doctor has to do is plug it into a computer and he has the answers to every critical question needed to properly treat you or a family member.

With LifeKey, all of your vital health information is available in just minutes - minutes that could make a difference in an emergency. Immediate access to your medical records could:
  Save your life
Save the life of your spouse or child

Reduce the cost by eliminating unnecessary overnight hospital stays and by eliminating unnecessary tests.

LifeKey is the only electronic medical record that doctors surveyed would depend on in a medical emergency because LifeKey works in any ER and contains the patient's complete medical record. It includes EKGs, new and old medications, allergies, physician notes; and an ER doctor can rely on the records because they are legal duplicates of the patient's paper medical file accumulated from all their doctors.

Easter Sunday of 2007 we woke to a snow covered world in the Flagstaff area. We also had our first medical emergency as a traveling RV'er. A call to our family doctor produced the order to go to the nearest Emergency Room and get help. Having a medical history that included Diabetes, a heart stint, and Coronary Artery Disease, the "incident" was hard to determine what was going on but something was not right.

The early diagnosis was made much more precise when I was able to produce my medical history by giving the ER my LifeKey and the attending physician was able to look at previous EKG's, history of CAD and blood pressure and lab results from my home base medical sources. The attending doctor was amazed at the quantity of the information, but also the quality of the data, some in living color. The comment was WOW, WHAT A GREAT ADVANTAGE TO HAVE ALL OF YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY……AND SO EASY …..just plug it into the laptop or PC and access the information, print what is needed and compare to current results.

With LifeKey you receive a plastic ID card that you carry in your wallet or purse. It is easily identifiable to any person that is going through your wallet. The card instructs the person (usually an EMT) that you have a LifeKey and that it contains vital health information. Furthermore, it instructs them how to use it.

  1. LifeKey can help save your life. In an emergency when life-and-death decisions are made, both timely and accurate information about your medical history is critical to those decisions.
  1. LifeKey will allow you to travel knowing that if you face a medical emergency, you have an accurate copy of your medical history to give to the ER doctor.
  1. LifeKey will improve the quality of medical treatment you receive when you go to the ER. With a precise medical history, including medications, allergies, EKGs, and so on, another physician treating you is empowered by information that will help to provide you with the best medical treatment.
  1. LifeKey will reduce the cost of medical treatment by eliminating unnecessary tests and unnecessary hospital stays.

I went on a trip to Florida with my son and daughter-in-law. I became ill and they had to take me to an urgent care facility for medical treatment. By the time we got there I was barely coherent and unable to provide the doctor with critical information. When the doctor turned to my son for answers, he felt completely helpless. I had just moved and he couldn't even give them my new address let alone what medications I was taking.

This was before LifeKey. With LifeKey that will never happened again because the doctor will have access to my complete medical file.

Since then, my doctor now offers LifeKey to his patients.

If LifeKey is important enough for doctors to recommend to their patients, don't you think that it is critical for you to have a LifeKey for your family? LifeKey could save your life or the life of someone you love.

"My father has had two heart attacks that have resulted in a triple bypass. I am a trauma nurse and have seen the problems that take place when patients can't remember their medical histories. Although my father is only 57 years old, he just is not tuned in to what medications he is taking. He used to go to the ER with his baggie full of pill bottles, but he now has a complete and accurate listing of his medications on LifeKey.

Last year he went into the emergency room presenting heart symptoms, only to discover it was indigestion. Unfortunately, because he has a damaged heart, his EKG does not appear normal. By having copies of his old EKGs, the ER doctor was able to rule out another heart attack and send him home without having to keep him overnight in the hospital. This saved over $2,000 in medical charges and gave us all peace of mind."

Hospitals are continually looking for ways to "safeguard" their patients. Until they "fine-tune" our health care system, it seems to make sense that we as patients and caregivers be alert to these types of situations.

Physicians understand the problems that an ER doctor faces when treating a patient that comes to the emergency room.

They also understand what a doctor needs to properly diagnose and treat an ER patient.

They need to know your medical history and what medications you are taking. The more accurate and detailed the information the better. But to be trusted and relied on by the ER doctor, the information must be in the proper format accepted by physicians everywhere. They must...

Let me say that again.

They must be exact copies. A doctor is not going to risk malpractice by relying on somebody's interpretation of the original document.

This is why many personal health records fall short of the mark. They are computer programs that require you to extract critical data from the original record and data enter that information into a computer program or onto a computer form.

This is not adequate!

Why? Because the doctor can't rely on the fact that you know what to extract and that the data was accurately entered into the program. In other words, that there are no data entry errors!

Here is a good example of a standard blood test. Which of these numbers are important to a doctor?

Does recording just four numbers from this page give a doctor the whole picture?
  • Triglycerides

  • HDL

  • LDL

  • Total Cholesterol

No!

Yet that is what most personal health records want you to do. They want you to determine what's important and what is not.

The reason the lab discloses all the test results on the lab report is because it's all important.

Here is another example: it is an EKG. This is a critical document for any ER doctor evaluating a heart patient yet there is nothing for you to transcribe into a computer program. You must have a copy of the original EKG!

But, some personal health records let you scan copies of your EKGs into their program, and you get a false sense of security.

Why, because you need a 1:1 ratio when scanning a document to achieve the proper spacing on the EKG. Do you know how to adjust your scanner to achieve the exact aspect ratio? Most people don't and I haven't seen a single computerized personal health record program tell you that it's required.

Without the correct settings, the copy of the EKG is worthless!

When we scan your records, we set the scanner to the proper settings, and quality control the output. You get an exact replica of the original document.

For a doctor to rely on the medical records that you provide them, they MUST have the doctor's signature.

This is critical...

Every doctor is taught in medical school that they have to sign a patient's chart to document that they have reviewed the information and that it is accurate.

This is why any physician can rely on the paper copy of a medical record as being accurate.

Paper copies are so reliable that they can be used in one's defense in a malpractice case. Without the signature of the doctor, the ER doctor is subjecting himself to legal liability if he relies on someone's interpretation of the medical record.

Most personal health records fall short in this respect, because they require the patient to fill in the blanks and interpret the records.

With LifeKey we create legal electronic copies of your medical records and include the complete record that is sent to us. These records include the signature of the physician that examined you.

If you want to provide the ER doctor with accurate and reliable information you need either:
A photocopy of your medical file, or
A legal electronic copy of your medical file.
You shouldn't accept anything less.

The risk of something going amiss on an airplane is 1 in 2 million, but a person faces a 1 in 200 risk of an error in a hospital.

To navigate successfully in today's medical system, you need to take responsibility for maintaining your own medical records. This does not mean that you need to have copies of every piece of paper, but it does mean that you need copies of important data pertaining to your health, such as EKGs, lab test results, surgical reports, and so on. In fact, HIPAA was passed to ensure that you can get copies of your medical records. But you must request them.

So the difference between a paper copy of your medical file and a legal electronic copy of your medical file on LifeKey is that of convenience!

Let's recap the benefits of LifeKey...

If you want to make sure that you nail down the opportunity to get started and substantially increase your likelihood of recovering quicker from illness, receiving much better health outcomes, increasing the likelihood of correct diagnosis, reducing your chance of medical errors, as well as improving your level of communication with your doctor, pharmacist and other health professionals - the time to act is NOW.

We will continue to update your LifeKey with new medical records as needed up to ten times a year. When you see your doctor just ask for a copy of your medical records for that office visit. Then send them to us and we will update your LifeKey and mail your replacement LifeKey to you.

LifeKey offers the most advanced military grade password/encryption software to securely protect your medical records. If your LifeKey is password protected, anyone that wants to view your medical records will need the password to unlock the file.

When you receive your LifeKey you will also receive an ID card to carry in your wallet. On the card will be your password so that you can hand the ID card and your LifeKey to the doctor giving them permission to unlock the file and view your records.

The majority of our subscribers, however, view this layer of security as a barrier to its use. Many feel they control who can see their records by physically controlling their LifeKey. They think the password/encryption software is unnecessary.

In fact, 93.7% of our customers request that we send their LifeKey without this extra security layer. Most of these LifeKey subscribers say that they don't want to have any barriers when that critical time comes and they need to use their LifeKey. They want emergency personnel to have immediate unfettered access to their medical records. They realize that their LifeKey can be lost or stolen but they are willing to assume that risk, and are not concerned if someone sees, for instance, their EKG.

To satisfy both those subscribers who don't want any barriers to their medical records and those subscribers who want the ultimate privacy and security, we have made the password/security feature on LifeKey optional.

People always say "without your health you have nothing" and they're absolutely right. If you've suffered through serious illness, you know that it's impossible to fully enjoy life in a sick or injured state.

Staring out the window at the "real world" from your hospital bed is no way to live - and it feels even worse if you discover that you've been put there through no fault of your own; but instead through misdiagnosis, unnecessary surgery, or a bad drug reaction.

Now is your chance to protect yourself from the very real threats that are lurking in the potentially dangerous world of the American healthcare system.

This is the ONLY system of its kind that will put you in the driver's seat of your healthcare, give you a greater sense of control, and in the end - greatly improve your chances of getting better. FAST.

Now Picture This:

It's a year from today. Like me, you found yourself in the ER because you had been advised to go there by your family doctor. You were having some discomfort and you thought that it might be a heart attack.

You gave them your LifeKey when you arrived at the hospital. They do an EKG, some blood-work, and the ER doctor reviews your past medical history. While they are waiting for the lab results, the doctor compares you're old EKG to your new one and tells you and you're family that based on the EKG it doesn't appear to be a heart attach but they will need to wait for the lab results before they can completely rule it out.

Everyone is relieved and you can see the stress leave their faces. The lab tests are now in and the doctor informs you that it is not a heart attack but probably indigestion and you are free to leave. Because you had a LifeKey, the doctor was able to focus on your health profile, eliminate the anxiety of the visit to the ER, and avoid an unnecessary $3,000 hospital stay.

So all that is left is for you to take action

WARNING: You might be saying to yourself, "This sounds good, I'll call next week." Please let me be very blunt with you for just a minute... Procrastination is a habit of someone in denial! It can only lead to unnecessary risk of medical errors. Call or order now while it is fresh in your mind...

So you can order now by completing our online order form.

Or call now! If you call outside of normal business hours, please leave a message, 24/7, with your name, address and phone number. Someone will contact you the next business day. Or you can go to the Internet and place your order online.

P.S. Please understand that we are not suggesting that doctors are not doing their best to treat a patient that has to go to the ER. ER doctors are dedicated individuals that are concerned about your health.

But, they are operating in an antiquated healthcare system that can cause unintentional medical errors. Our current system fails to get critical patient information to the ER doctor on a timely basis.

LifeKey was created to fill this gaping gap in the healthcare system. It provides the ER doctor with the same information that your personal physician has access to. This critical information is needed to provide you with the best medical care.

P.P.S. One lesson learned from Hurricane Katrina is that it is critical that you have a copy of your medical records with you.

Thousands needed to continue their medications, but escaped with only the clothes on their backs. The water destroyed all of their medical records.

"The lesson to be learned from New Orleans, where many physicians' records have been washed away forever, is that patients are well-advised to take on basic record-keeping themselves."

Health officials quoted in the Time's article: Katrina's Lingering Medical Nightmare
-Chronically Ill Storm Victims Struggle to Piece Together Medical Records Lost in the Storm
by Amanda Bower, posted September 22, 2005

P.P.P.S. Don't forget - You Are MORE Likely to Die From A Medical Error Than Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, Pneumonia, Alzheimer's disease or Renal Disease. Don't let that happen to you. LifeKey greatly improves the chances that you'll; recover quicker from an illness, receive much better health outcomes, increase the likelihood of correct diagnosis, reduce your chance of medical errors, as well as improving your level of communication with your doctor, pharmacist and other health professionals.
